
The Center for Active Learning and Integrated Development (CALID), with funding support from the Japanese Embassy in Ghana has officially broken ground for the construction of a six-unit classroom block for the Nwoduwa community in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region.
The much-needed project will provide a conducive learning environment for students and teachers while addressing challenges such as overcrowding and inadequate classroom infrastructure. The new facility will include six fully furnished classrooms, an ICT laboratory, a staff common room and modern washrooms. The contract has been awarded to A Fataw Wumpini Construction Company Ltd, which is expected to complete the project within ten months.
Commitment to Quality Education
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, the Kumbungu District Coordinating Director commended CALID for its commitment to improving education in rural communities. He emphasized that quality education requires not only dedicated teachers and learning materials but also a proper physical environment where students can thrive.
The Kumbungu District Education Director echoed similar sentiments, stating that the project aligns with the government’s efforts to ensure equitable access to education. He expressed optimism that the new classroom block would significantly enhance learning outcomes for students in the Nwoduwa community.
Community Appreciation and Support
The ceremony was attended by community leaders, parents and teachers who expressed their joy and gratitude for the project. Chiefs and elders of Nwoduwa highlighted the importance of education in driving social and economic development and commended CALID for spearheading this initiative.
Speaking on behalf of the community Chief the Naazo of the chief noted, “For years, our children have struggled with poor learning conditions, often studying under trees or in makeshift structures. This new facility is a dream come true for our community and we are extremely grateful to CALID and the Japanese Embassy for making it a reality. We pledge our full support to ensure the successful completion of the project.”
Parents also expressed their excitement, noting that the improved infrastructure would encourage more children to stay in school and take their education seriously.
Implementation and Expected Impact
With construction work set to begin immediately, the project is expected to transform the educational landscape of Nwoduwa. The school block will reduce overcrowding and allowing for better student-teacher engagement. The ICT lab will offer students the opportunity to develop essential computer skills as the inclusion of a staff common room will provide teachers with a comfortable space for lesson planning and professional discussions. The project after completed is also expected to increase enrollment as it will attract more students to school and reducing dropout rates.
Community members have pledged to support the project by providing labor assistance and ensuring the security of materials and equipment throughout the construction period.

The groundbreaking of this six-unit classroom block marks a major milestone in the quest for improved education in the Kumbungu District. With the strong commitment of CALID and the generous funding from the Japanese Embassy, the project is expected to create lasting benefits for generations to come.

The school is expected to be ready for use in 10 months, bringing new opportunities and hope to the children of Nwoduwa.
